Hands-on workshops and exhibitions, all here on King St!

artisan, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting contemporary craft and design practice for both makers and their audiences, is the home of craft and design in Queensland. 

Now back open for 2021 and welcoming customers, artisan has launched yet another amazing workshop series, so if you’ve ever wanted to learn or hone a new skill then one of these workshops could be just for you! They’re loads of fun, you get to meet like-minded people and you’ll take away more than just a great time! All workshops can be booked here and are all held at artisan, 45 King Street, Bowen Hills. 

Saturday 6 February, 11am – 2pm
Subversive Creature Creation with Michelle Vine
Cost: $115 per person, including all materials

Join the multidisciplinary Drawn Thread artist, Michelle Vine, for a fun adventure into soft sculpture as you subversively repurpose household appliances into soft, furry, colourful companions. Book here

Saturday 13 February, 11am – 2pm
Pillow Talk with Sue-Ching Lascelles
Cost: $100 per person. Limited to 10 places. 
Skill level: Suitable for all adults, no prior knowledge necessary

Join Drawn Thread soft sculpture artist, Sue-Ching Lascelles, for the workshop ‘Pillow Talk’. Each participant will be provided with a pillow and will be shown how to deconstruct and reconstruct it into an everyday item soft sculpture to take home. You will learn how to interpret an object from life and recreate it in a whimsical and fun way by employing stitching and adorning techniques. Book here

Cyanotyping Jewellery with Emma Gardner
Cost: $110 per person
Skill level: Suitable for all adults, no prior knowledge necessary


Join Brisbane textile artist, Emma Gardner for an engaging workshop where you’ll be introduced to the mesmerising world of cyanotype. You’ll use repurposed thrifted costume jewellery as you create unique and beautiful textile compositions to use in your home. Book here

Saturday 6 March, 10am - 2pm
Electro-etching jewellery with Clare Poppi
Cost:
$185 per person
Skill level: Suitable for ages 18+, no experience necessary

Learn how to electro-etch sterling silver using silver nitrate and a laboratory power supply using an environmentally sustainable technique. Each participant will make either a pair of earrings or a pendant during the three-hour workshop. Silver blanks will be provided and participants will draw their own unique designs onto the surface of the metal in preparation for etching. This course is suitable for beginners with no experience or jewellers who wish to add a new skill to their repertoire. Book here

Felted Feminist earrings with Lulu Geraghty
Cost: $95 per person
Skill level: Suitable for all adults, no prior knowledge necessary 

Join media sensation Lulu Geraghty for a felted earring workshop celebrating feminist textile arts and the female form, or your own creation. Learn the meditative art of felting to create a pair of unique earrings from a selection of 3D printed moulds created by Lulu. Book here

Saturday 27 March, 11am - 2pm 
Diamond drop micro macrame earrings with Vicrame Creations
Cost: $90 per person
Skill level: Suitable for ages16+. No experience necessary. Due to the intricate nature of the skills learned in this workshop, it is best suited for keen eyes and fingers. Other ability levels welcome but your new skill will take longer to implement. 

Learn to create unique micro macramé earrings inspired by traditional South American techniques with Vicrame Creations. Vicrame will guide you through the process of learning artisanal skills you can take away with you as well as a unique pair of hand-crafted earrings. Book here

Discover artisan's CURRENT EXHIBITIONS, Drawn Thread and the street viewable gallery on Machinery Street, Bowen Hills for Millie Radovic's exhibition, Close Knit.  All works from the Close Knit are available for purchase, just head to the artisan store on King Street, Bowen Hills to purchase. Both shows are up until 13 February, so be quick.
