CURRENT EXHIBITIONS

POPE ALICE - A HEAD OF HER TIME
Machinery Street Gallery, 28 August - 10 October 2020

artisan launches its new Machinery Street gallery with a selection of otherworldly headdresses from the collection of Her Divine Holiness Pope Alice in recognition of her 40th year on planet Earth. Her Divine Holiness Pope Alice was first channelled by artist Luke Roberts in the 1970s. A ‘forerunner’ to Pope Joan* and Lewis Carroll’s heroine, Pope Alice is an enigmatic alien figure embodied by Roberts in a substantial catalogue of artwork and events throughout Australia and internationally. Alice has led pilgrimages and parades, presided over queer kiss-in protests, and distributed free condoms emblazoned with the slogan POPE ALICE LOVES YOU TO LIFE!* the legendary medieval pope who was revealed to be a woman masquerading as a man when she entered childbirth during a church procession.

MADE/ WORN: Australian Contemporary Jewellery
Main Gallery and Small Object Space, 28 August - 10 October 2020

Celebrating diversity and inclusivity, Made/ Worn includes the work of 20+ contemporary jewellery artists working in Australia now. Jewellery is an act of art, craft and design, and also lives and breathes on the bodies of those who wear it. From intimate pieces to large scale works, the contemporary jewellery in this exhibition explores the act of making and how jewellery is worn on the body, telling stories that start with the artist and continue through the life of the object as a worn and viewed item, creating new resonances with owners into the future.

Spanning a wide range of materials, techniques and meanings, the works on display are playful, intricate, conceptual, personal and political. The artists also engage with themes of place, sustainability in materials and identity. Made/ Worn: Australian Contemporary Jewellery is an Australian Design Centre (ADC On Tour) national touring exhibition, presented with assistance from the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
